New Build Croft House

Glenfeshie, Cairngorms National Park

This was a particularly challenging application as we were seeking to build a new house on a greenfield site in an environmentally sensitive area.

Other difficulties included the site being on the edge of the flood plain by the fastest changing river in Europe. The foundations therefore had to be designed to accommodate possible undermining. Working in association with specialist planning consultants Fraser Halliday Munro, I managed to obtain planning permission (under Policy 22, a residence can be constructed where a worker is in an occupation appropriate to the rural location).

The site is in a stunning location overlooking the River Feshie and has been designed as a combination of traditional vernacular and modern design, with large areas of glazing to take advantage of the wonderful views. In addition, I contested building regulation policy with regards spread of smoke in external cavities and sought a Ministerial Review from the Scottish Government which approved my proposed construction.
